The Story Behind Movelio Bed Roller
The Story Behind Movelio Bed Roller
TL;DR: Movelio Bed Roller was born from my own struggle with long-term back problems. After trying therapists, exercises, home massage products, and different approaches without finding something that worked well enough for daily life, I built the first prototype in my garage using a modified sun lounger, wheels, and a foam roller.
The idea was simple: create a way to lie down, relax, and receive deep, adjustable pressure without needing another person, a motor, or a handheld device. That idea became Movelio Bed Roller — a Norwegian-designed, non-electric massage system for deep, controlled self-massage at home, in gyms, workplaces, and wellness environments.

It Started With a Back Problem I Could Not Escape
Movelio Bed Roller did not begin as a business idea. It began with a problem that slowly took over my life.
I was working as an engineer in the oil industry when my back started to cause serious problems. At first, I thought it would pass. It did not. Over time, the pain, stiffness, and discomfort spread through my entire back and started affecting almost everything I did.
I often slept only around four hours before I had to get up because of the pain. Work became harder. Training became frustrating because running, disc golf, and other activities often made me feel worse afterwards. Simple work around the house and garden became difficult. Even travelling felt almost impossible, because sitting in an airplane seat for several hours was something I could barely imagine.
With so little sleep, my energy disappeared. It affected my mood, my family, and my outlook on the future.
I tried many things: hiking, strength training, rest, exercises, yoga, doctors, different therapists, and even a stay at a back clinic. Everyone had their own perspective. Different explanations. Different methods. Different things to try.
I understood that they were trying to help, but for me, nothing gave the lasting change I was looking for. Sometimes I felt a little better for a few hours after treatment, but then the same problems came back.
At the same time, I started buying different massage products so I could try to help myself at home. I tested everything I could find. Some products did not have enough power. Others were difficult to use on my own back. Many gave a short feeling of relief, but not the deep, controlled pressure I was looking for.
The thing that actually felt best was when my children carefully walked on my back. It was not just the pressure. It was the combination of deep pressure, relaxation, and the feeling that it reached exactly where I needed it. My body could rest while the pressure did the work. That experience stayed with me.
One evening, I was lying on the floor with a foam roller under my back. Foam rolling could give pressure, but it required effort. I had to hold myself up, balance, control the movement, and tense my body at the same time.
Then the idea came:
What if I could move back and forth over a roller while my body stayed relaxed? What if I could control the pressure myself, without needing another person, without motors, and without holding a device in my hand?
That was the beginning of the concept that later became Movelio Bed Roller.
The First Prototype Was Built in My Garage
The first prototype was simple. I bought a used sun lounger online and cut off the legs. Then I built a wooden frame and added four wheels underneath. To adjust the pressure, I placed one or more plywood boards under a foam roller and positioned it beneath the frame.
The sun lounger was long, so in the beginning my children had to push me back and forth. It may sound rough, but the first time I tried it, I knew there was something there.

For the first time, I felt the kind of deep pressure I had been missing from ordinary massage products. It felt closer to having access to strong manual pressure whenever I needed it — but without needing another person. It was not perfect, but the feeling was completely different.
From that moment, I started improving it. I shortened the frame so I could move myself using my legs. I built a metal bracket with three height adjustments so I could increase or reduce the pressure. Then I found a way to keep the roller stable so it would not move or get stuck during use.
At first, I built it only for myself. But the effect felt so different from anything I had tried before that I wanted a second opinion from someone I trusted. That is when I contacted physiotherapist Stian Engum.
I invited him to my home to test the prototype. I was nervous. After a short introduction, he lay down and started testing it. He used it not only on his back, but also on his hips, glutes, and thighs — more areas than I had originally imagined.
Stian had recommended foam rollers to patients for many years. He knew they could be useful, but also that many people find them uncomfortable, awkward, or difficult to use correctly. What he noticed with the prototype was different. The body could relax.
He said something that stayed with me:
“If massage is going to be effective, the body has to be able to relax. Otherwise, it works against the pressure. Here, you can completely relax.”
He also said that this could open the door for many people to do this kind of self-massage more easily at home. That feedback mattered. It confirmed that this was not only a homemade solution for my own back. It was a concept with much bigger potential.

The Routine That Changed Everything for Me
Even after the prototype started to take shape, I did not use it systematically in the beginning. I used it mostly when my back felt especially bad. It always felt good afterwards, but I had not yet understood the importance of regular use.
One evening, Stian looked at me and said that if I really wanted to see what this could do, I had to use it every day — morning and evening.
So I did. I started carefully, with the frame set at the lightest pressure. My back was sore, and I had to let my body get used to it. I used it for around 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the evening.
After a few days, I could increase the pressure. Then I increased it again. After two weeks, I was using the deepest pressure level.
For me, that became the turning point. The back problems that had controlled my life for almost two years gradually let go. I got my sleep back. I could train again. I could travel again. I could function in daily life without my back controlling everything.
I cannot promise that everyone will experience the same result. But my own experience was clear: regular use of Bed Roller changed my everyday life.
Today, I use it when I need it — for example after garden work, training, or long days when my body feels stiff and tired. That is when I realized this had to become more than a personal project. If this could make such a difference for me, then there had to be other people out there looking for a better way to massage their back at home. That was the beginning of Movelio.
For me, Movelio started because Bed Roller helped me. Now the goal is to help others.
Real Users Helped Shape the Product
Once the concept was clear, the next question was simple: Would this work for other people too? And would people actually want to use it?
Movelio was accepted into Gründer Academy, and we received support from Innovation Norway. That gave us the opportunity to test the concept more systematically.
More than 250 people in Bergen registered interest in testing the early prototype. We set aside three full days and evenings so as many people as possible could try it. But the testing was not only about whether people liked the idea. We wanted to understand their real challenges. Where did they feel stiffness or discomfort? What had they already tried? What frustrated them with existing massage products? What would make a home massage system worth using regularly?
The feedback confirmed something important: People wanted a product that was powerful, simple to use, adjustable, and possible to relax on. That matched my own experience.
People did not just want more vibration or another handheld device. They wanted something that could give deeper pressure without requiring them to hold, balance, twist, or strain their body during use. The pilot testing also showed us what needed improvement.
We identified four key areas:
- More pressure was needed for the lower back.
- The pillow had to be adjustable.
- The frame had to be easier to raise and lower.
- The design had to feel more premium and better suited to real homes, gyms, and professional environments.

The Movelio-Developed S-Roller and I-Roller: Two Pressure Profiles
The need for more targeted lower-back pressure led to the development of the S-Roller. It was designed to give deeper, more focused pressure along the muscles of the back without placing direct pressure on the spine itself.
The I-Roller was kept because it covers larger areas and gives a broader, more even pressure. It is especially useful for areas such as the glutes, hips, thighs, and legs.
The pillow was moved outside the frame and given its own height adjustment, so users could find a more comfortable position for the head and neck.
The height-adjustment mechanism became one of the most difficult technical challenges. We had to create a simple, strong, and safe way to raise and lower the frame in a very limited space. After many tests and versions, we developed a side mechanism with a safety lock that allows two wheels to be adjusted at the same time.
In total, we went through five main prototypes — not counting all the different mechanisms and adjustment solutions we tested along the way.
Finally, we chose European beech for the frame. That choice was both practical and aesthetic. Beech is strong, stable, and beautiful. We wanted Movelio Bed Roller to feel like a premium product — something that could belong in a living room, a gym, a clinic, or a wellness space.

Why Movelio Bed Roller Is Different
I did not create Bed Roller to make just another massage product. I created it because it felt different from everything else I had tried.
Most massage tools solve only part of the problem. A massage gun can be useful for small, targeted areas, but it is hard to use properly on your own back. A massage pillow can be relaxing, but often has limited pressure and limited control. A foam roller can give strong pressure, but it requires active effort, balance, and body tension. A massage chair can feel comfortable, but it is large, expensive, and less precise.
Movelio Bed Roller works in a different way. You lie down. Your body is supported. The pressure comes from your own body weight. You control the movement, the pressure, the body position, and the roller.
It combines deep adjustable massage, static pressure, dynamic rolling massage, and gentle back mobilisation in one non-electric system. No motor. No battery. No charging. No vibration. Just controlled pressure, movement, and gravity.
That is the core idea behind Movelio Bed Roller. Recovery made simple — with deep, controlled self-massage you can use at home when your body needs it.

Built in Norway for Deep, Controlled Self-Massage
Today, Movelio Bed Roller is used by people who want a more powerful and controlled way to massage the back, hips, glutes, thighs, and legs.
- For home users: It offers a way to work with stiffness and tension on their own terms.
- For gyms and recovery areas: It offers a non-electric massage system that can be used without motors, noise, or charging.
- For workplaces: It can become a tool for people who sit a lot, move too little, work physically, or feel stiff and tired during the day.
- For clinics, physiotherapists, and wellness environments: It offers a simple way to give users access to deep, adjustable self-massage.
What started as a personal project in a garage has become a fully developed Norwegian massage system. And for me, the mission is still personal. I know what it feels like when your back controls your life. I also know what it feels like to get that freedom back. That is why Movelio exists.
