My Story
By Christopher Scheiene, Founder of Movelio
Pain led to a breakthrough, and a simple idea became a powerful solution. Keep reading to discover how.
Back pain turned into a breakthrough
I was working as an engineer in the oil industry when the back pain started — and it just wouldn’t go away.
I was advised to try everything from hiking and strength training to rest, stretching, and yoga.
I saw doctors, different therapists, and even spent time at a back clinic, but nothing helped.
At the same time, I started buying different massage devices to try to help myself at home.
I tested everything I could find. Some lacked power, others were difficult to use, and many simply didn’t go deep enough to loosen up my back and muscles.
What actually helped the most was the deep pressure I felt when my kids walked on my back.
One evening, while lying on the floor with a foam roller under my back, it hit me:
What if I could rest my body while being massaged — and adjust the pressure exactly as I wanted, anytime, without help from anyone else? Could that work?
That moment became the starting point for what would later become the Bed Roller.
It started in my Garage
I bought a used sunbed online and cut off the legs.
Then I built a wooden frame and attached four wheels underneath.
To adjust the pressure, I placed one or more plywood boards under a foam roller, which I positioned beneath the frame — and now it was time to test it.
The tanning bed was long, so I asked my kids to push me back and forth.
It was magical.
This was the best and most effective massage device I had ever tried, so I decided to make it even better.
I shortened the frame so I could use my legs to push myself back and forth.
Then I made a metal bracket with three height settings for more or less massage pressure — and finally found a way to keep the foam roller steady in place, so it wouldn’t get stuck over time.
At first, I built it just for myself. But the effect and the concept worked so well that I wanted a second opinion from someone I trusted.
I contacted physiotherapist Stian Engum, whom I had seen years earlier — known for his strong, hands-on treatments that could release deep muscle tension.
I invited Stian over to test the prototype. I was nervous to hear what he would say.
After a short introduction, he started using it — massaging not only the back, but also the hips, glutes, and thighs — even more than I had imagined it could be used for.
For 15 years, Stian had recommended foam rollers to his patients, but he also knew how painful and difficult they could be to use.
“For a massage to be effective, you have to be able to relax — otherwise your body resists,” he said.
“Here, you can completely relax.”
He was impressed by how powerful it was, even with just three height settings.
I took all his feedback and continued refining the product.
