My Story

By Christopher Scheiene, Founder of Movelio

Pain led to a breakthrough, and a simple idea became a powerful solution. Keep reading to discover how.

Back pain turned into a breakthrough

I was working as an engineer in the oil industry when the back pain started — and it just wouldn’t go away.

I was advised to try everything from hiking and strength training to rest, stretching, and yoga.

I saw doctors, different therapists, and even spent time at a back clinic, but nothing helped.

At the same time, I started buying different massage devices to try to help myself at home.

I tested everything I could find. Some lacked power, others were difficult to use, and many simply didn’t go deep enough to loosen up my back and muscles.

What actually helped the most was the deep pressure I felt when my kids walked on my back.

One evening, while lying on the floor with a foam roller under my back, it hit me:

What if I could rest my body while being massaged — and adjust the pressure exactly as I wanted, anytime, without help from anyone else? Could that work?

That moment became the starting point for what would later become the Bed Roller.

It started in my Garage

I bought a used sunbed online and cut off the legs.

Then I built a wooden frame and attached four wheels underneath.

To adjust the pressure, I placed one or more plywood boards under a foam roller, which I positioned beneath the frame — and now it was time to test it.

The tanning bed was long, so I asked my kids to push me back and forth.

It was magical.

This was the best and most effective massage device I had ever tried, so I decided to make it even better.

I shortened the frame so I could use my legs to push myself back and forth.

Then I made a metal bracket with three height settings for more or less massage pressure — and finally found a way to keep the foam roller steady in place, so it wouldn’t get stuck over time.

At first, I built it just for myself. But the effect and the concept worked so well that I wanted a second opinion from someone I trusted.

I contacted physiotherapist Stian Engum, whom I had seen years earlier — known for his strong, hands-on treatments that could release deep muscle tension.

I invited Stian over to test the prototype. I was nervous to hear what he would say.

After a short introduction, he started using it — massaging not only the back, but also the hips, glutes, and thighs — even more than I had imagined it could be used for.

For 15 years, Stian had recommended foam rollers to his patients, but he also knew how painful and difficult they could be to use.

“For a massage to be effective, you have to be able to relax — otherwise your body resists,” he said.

“Here, you can completely relax.”

He was impressed by how powerful it was, even with just three height settings.

I took all his feedback and continued refining the product.

The Key That Made Me Pain-Free

Even though the Bed Roller was starting to take shape, I only used it occasionally — usually when my back pain was at its worst.

It always felt great after a session, but I had no idea what was about to happen next.

One evening, Stian and I were sitting in my living room watching TV.

He looked at me and said:

“If you really want results, you have to use the Bed Roller every day — morning and evening, for about 20 minutes.”

I took the challenge.

I started by setting the frame to the highest position, giving the lightest pressure, because my back was sore and sensitive.

At that time, the Bed Roller had five pressure levels, and with daily use it didn’t take long before I could increase it one level — and then another.

Soon, I started to notice real changes in my everyday life.

Gradually, I kept increasing the pressure, and after two weeks I was using the Bed Roller at the maximum setting.

That’s when it happened — all the chronic back pain I’d had for two years disappeared.

It was an incredible feeling, but more than anything, it was a huge relief.

I thought to myself: If this could help me, maybe it could help others too.

That’s when I founded Movelio — with the goal of refining the Bed Roller into a premium massage device and making it available to more people.

Tested. Refined. Perfected.

There was no turning back now.

Movelio was accepted into Gründer Academy, a Norwegian startup accelerator, and we also received support from Innovation Norway.

The first phase was about finding out two things: Does it work? — and Will people actually buy it?

The response came quickly.

More than 250 people in Bergen signed up to test the Bed Roller, so we set aside three full days and evenings to give as many as possible the chance to try it. We also tested the Bed Roller on physiotherapy patients to collect valuable professional feedback.

After the pilot tests, the answer from users was clear:

“The Bed Roller works - and I want one!”

Movelio went on to receive additional support from Innovation Norway, new investors joined, and we were accepted as a member of Eitri Medical Incubator at Haukeland University Hospital.

From the pilot testing, we identified four key improvements we needed to make to the Bed Roller:

  • Increase the pressure in the lower back
  • Make the pillow height-adjustable
  • Simplify the frame’s lift mechanism
  • And enhance the overall design

We solved the first challenge by developing the S-Roller — a roller with ball-shaped segments that reach deep into the spinal muscles without direct contact with the spine.

The pillow was moved to the outer side of the frame and given its own lift mechanism with six levels of adjustment.

Finding the optimal frame adjustment required extensive work and testing, but we finally achieved it through a simple side mechanism with a safety lock that allows two wheels to be raised or lowered at the same time.

Finally, we chose European beech wood for the frame — to give the product a natural feel and a true sense of premium quality.

Norwegian engineered. Built for results.

Our largest customer group consists of people with stiff or sore backs who want to be able to massage themselves at home.

We’re also seeing more and more employers introducing the Bed Roller in workplaces — allowing employees to release tension, boost energy, and prevent stiffness during the day.

The Bed Roller is also used by physiotherapists as part of their treatments, and several gyms have adopted it for recovery and mobility work.

What started as a personal project in a garage has grown into a complete product — and an entirely new way of thinking about massage and recovery.

The feedback from our customers couldn’t have been better.

"For me, Movelio started as a way to fix my own back.Today, it’s become a mission to help others regain movement, energy, and wellbeing."
